Current Rules For Dogs on Beaches in Scarborough, Maine
Originally created to keep members of the dog owning public aware of beach access issues, this site will gradually evolve to promote responsible dog ownership. In 2010 and again in 2014, The Town Council of Scarborough added new restrictions to our town's beaches which involve several ordinances that will impact beach goers, tourists, kite flyers, dog walkers, and horse owners. To access all the ordinance changes, please visit the town's web site. For the new Animal Control Ordinance, please click here.
The changes made include the following, but please review the ordinance itself for a complete list of regulations:
New Fall/Winter/Spring Restrictions:
No off-leash dogs from 1-3 pm from
the day after Labor Day until May 15th
New Summer Restrictions:
All beaches are divided into "Restricted Zones" and "Unrestricted Zones" although there are still a number of restrictions in the "unrestricted" areas. Summer restrictions begin starting May 15 instead of the prior June 15 start time. Dogs are allowed off-leash in unrestricted areas from 6am-9am during the summer season, are banned from all beaches completely from 9am-5pm and are allowed on leash in "unrestricted" areas from 5pm to dusk.
